Ovulation is a process during which egg is ruptured form the follicle of the ovary. Although the exact cause for Mittelschmerz is not known, it is believed that when the egg ruptures from the follicle it causes stretching of the ovary and this can cause pain.
Clinical presentation
The pain of Mittelschermz usually occurs mid-cycle. It may be felt on alternate sides of the abdomen each month or on the same side for several months in a row. The pain can be dull, cramp like or sharp and sudden.
Investigations
Diagnosis is usually based upon the timing of pain as narrated by the patient. However if your doctor suspects anything abnormal, he/she may order ultrasound of the abdomen to find the probable cause for your pain.
Treatment
Treatment is usually not required since the condition settles on its own in 24 hours. If the pain is severe then painkillers may be prescribed. If you have Mittelschmerz every month, then your doctor may recommend taking birth control pills to prevent ovulation.
