Mydriasis

Normally pupils dilate when there is a low light. Mydriasis is defined as a condition in which the eyes are abnormally dilated even when the environment is bright. The pupils fail to constrict with light stimulation and dilatation persists.

Causes and risk factors

Mydriasis can be caused due to disease like epilepsy, stroke, raised intracranial pressure, trauma to the head or eye, or even due to use of certain drugs. The basic pathophysiology involves disruption of the working of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system.

Clinical presentation

This condition may affect one or both pupils. Presence of abnormally dilated pupil even in bright light is the typical symptom of mydriasis.

Investigations

A detailed medical history along with ophthalmic examination is done to find the cause of mydriasis.

Treatment

Treatment involves identifying and treating the underlying cause of mydriasis.
