Neonatal teeth

As per the normal physiology, the first teeth begin to erupt from the age of 6 months. However, in some cases the teeth can erupt early. Appearance of teeth during the first 30 days after birth is termed as neonatal teeth.

Causes and risk factors

Neonatal teeth is said to be a developmental disorder. It is commonly reported with babies with cleft lip or cleft palate. It is also said to be associated with certain other medical conditions.

 

Clinical presentation:

A few days after the birth of the child, a small pair of teeth at the center of the lower gums is seen. The mother usually comes complaining that her baby has small conical shaped teeth which are yellowish brown in color. They cause discomfort to the nursing mother. As these teeth are loose, they can cause injury to the tongue and can also pose a risk for aspiration to the baby.

 

Investigations:

The complaints narrated by the mother are taken into consideration. Clinical examination carried out helps in confirming the diagnosis. Dental x-ray is done. If required, certain other investigations can also be advised.

 

Treatment:

The treatment consists of either conservative methods or surgical extraction. Grinding or smoothing of the edges of the teeth can be done. Composite resins or protective rings to cover the edges of tooth are applied. In surgical intervention, extraction of tooth is done under topical anesthetic cream. Vitamin K injections are given before surgery. Topical fluoride application is prescribed along with maintenance of dental hygiene.

 

Facts and figures:

The incidence of neonatal tooth is 1 in 2000 live births or 1 in 3500 live births.
