Causes and risk factors:
The exact cause of non ulcer stomach pain is not known. Studies have put forth that it is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract which mimic symptoms of a gastric ulcer. Helicopylori bacterial infection is said to be the triggering factor. Stress and anxiety can aggravate the complaints.
Clinical presentations:
An individual comes up with complaints of pain in abdomen. It is dull aching in nature. At times crampy pain is experienced. Nausea occurs. There is a feeling of heaviness and bloating in abdomen which is aggravated after meals .A continuous feeling of discomfort is experienced by the patient. Burning in the epigastric region can be felt.
Diagnosis and investigations:
In case if non ulcer stomach pain diagnosis is done ruling out the other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The symptoms narrated by the patient and certain investigations are helpful. There is no specific test for diagnosing the condition, however investigations like routine blood test, stool examination, a breath test (for helicopylori infection) an abdominal ultrasound along with endoscopy can be advised.
Treatment:
There is no specific treatment for non ulcer stomach pain. Symptomatic relief of the complaints is done. Antacids, anti spasmodic or pain reliving medications are advised. Certain dietary changes need to be implemented. Frequent intake of small meals, avoiding excess of fatty and rich food, fried food, limiting the intake of alcohol, tobacco, smoking, coffee and tea, weight reduction in obese are certain measure to be adopted.
