Causes and risk factors
It is caused by pubic lice, Phthirus pubis, which has infestation in the pubic area. Phthiriasis palpebrarum lives below the skin of eyelids. The other causes are poor hygiene, sexual contact with an already infected person, and overcrowded environment.
Clinical presentation
Patient presents with intense itching of eyelids. There is tickling sensation with something moving in the eyelids being experienced. There is redness in the eyes. There is excessive lachrymation. Visual discomfort is experienced. Discoloration of skin occurs if the condition is left untreated for a long time.
Investigations
Medical history by the patient and clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. Parasite examination & microscopy is done to confirm the diagnosis. Routine blood test may be done.
Treatment
Mechanical removal is the effective treatment. Application of petroleum jelly is helpful in case of severe itching. Application of certain chemical compounds is advised.
Complications
Complications such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis may occur. Discoloration of skin may occur.

Prevention
Proper hygienic practices, clean environment will prevent the disease. Pubic lice infestation must be treated.
