Polymyositis

Polymyositis is defined as an autoimmune disorder characterize by inflammation and weakness of the muscles especially the skeletal muscles. It is also called as an idiopathic myopathy. Though any person of both sexes at any age can suffer from this illness, incidence is seen high in cases of women above the age of 50 years.

Causes and risk factors

The exact cause of polymyositis is not known however it is said to be an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the body tissue resulting in inflammation and weakness of the muscles. In most of the cases it is triggered by viral infection or cancer. It can also be hereditary in certain families.

 

Clinical presentation:

Weakness of muscles is the marked feature of polymyositis. It occurs gradually and the muscles affection becomes worse over a period of times rendering difficulty in day to day activities. The shoulder and hip muscles are more commonly affected as compared to other muscles. However the muscles of the hand, feet and head are less commonly affected. The patient experiences pain in muscles and easy fatigue. Involvement of the joints, esophagus and heart can also be seen. The joint can be swollen and visible deformity can be seen. Tingling and numbness can also be felt in the surrounding areas. Tremors, breathlessness and difficulty in swallowing are other associated symptoms. Polymyositis can lead to complications like Raynauds diseases, lung diseases and cardiovascular affections.

 

Investigations:

Diagnosis is done of the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination is carried out by the doctor. Electromyography and muscle biopsy are the diagnostic test. The levels of creatinine kinase are also checked. Routine blood test along with other investigations can be advised. MRI or CT scan can also be done.

 

Treatment:

Medications like steroids or immunosuppressive drugs are advised. In mild cases topical steroid ointments are recommended. Sun blocking agents are also prescribed. Along with medication physiotherapy exercises along with a consultation from occupational therapist play a major role.

 

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up the symptom. Taking into consideration the symptoms in holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints. Yoga exercises can also be helpful in relieving the pain and strengthening the muscles.
