Pseudofolliculitis Barbae

Pseudofolliculitis Barbae

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is an inflammatory reaction characterized by formation of papules and pustules in the beard area particularly after shaving. It is an inflammatory condition around the facial hair. This condition is also known as shaving rash or razor bumps. Incidence is high in post-pubertal age.

Causes and risk factors

Shaving is the main causative factor for this condition. It is commonly seen in people who have thick, curly hair in the beard area. On closely shaving the curly hair, the sharp, pointed ends coming out of the skin can reenter the skin causing an inflammation. Piercing of the follicular wall by the sharp tip of growing hair can also lead to complaints. It is of two types – transfollicular or extra-follicular. Improper techniques of shaving or clean shaving can predispose one to pseudofolliculitis barbae. Use of contaminated shaving kits can also add up to its causation.

Clinical presentation:

Appearance of papules and pustules in the beard area is a characteristic feature seen. Lesions containing shaft of hair are seen. In some cases, the hair seems to pierce the lesion and pop out from the center. The affected area becomes red and inflamed and burning pain along with discomfort can also be felt. Touch of cloth or pressure causes soreness. Infection in these vulnerable areas can lead to abscess formation.

Investigations:

Generally the symptoms narrated by the patient and clinical examination carried out by the dermatologist is sufficient for the diagnosis. If there is a recent history of shaving, no investigation is required.

Treatment:

The treatment consists of administration of medication. Topical ointments or oral antibiotics can be given. Laser hair removal is an effective treatment in severe cases. Adopting certain preventive measures before and during shaving is of foremost importance. Use of moisturizing shaving foams, single blades, clean trimming machines, use of after-shaves and shaving in the direction of the follicle are some preventive methods.

Other modes of treatment:

Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the disease. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
