Ring Scotoma

A scotoma is a blind spot in the field of vision. A ring scotoma is an annular blind spot in the visual field, centered on fixation. A ring scotoma may be located centrally, pericentrally, or mid-peripherally.

Causes and risk factors

Ring scotomas frequently occur in patients with glaucoma. Pigmentary degeneration of the retina and optic nerve disorders are the other known causes.

Clinical presentation

Ring scotoma can affect one or both the eyes. The patients present with a sudden loss of vision in a ring-shaped area of the visual field. However, the visual acuity remains unaffected.

Investigations

A ring scotoma can be detected on a complete ophthalmological examination. Specialized investigations such as an electroretinogram or fluorescein angiography may be performed.

Treatment

The underlying cause must be identified and treated. Scotomas have a limited scope for improvement.

Contact a doctor as soon as you experience loss of vision in a particular area of the visual field.
