Causes and risk factors
Sudden impact or trauma is one of the major contributing factorfactors for a fracture. Trauma, especially seen in road accidents or fall on a palm can also lead to fracture. People engaged in wrestling or boxers are also more prone for to such injuries.
Clinical presentation:
Unlike any other fracture, pain is the predominant feature which is aggravated by movement of the thumb. Rapid swelling and bruising ., dislocation of the bone gives rise to deformity. On examination, tenderness is present. The fracture is mostly seen in T or Y shaped and is seen in sagittal or frontal plane.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done on the basis of the symptoms narrated by the patient and the physical examination carried out by the orthopedic doctor. Investigations which are done are x-ray of the bone. Usually routine x-rays or specialized digital x-rays along with CT scan and MRI are advised.
Treatment:
Rest and restriction of movement needs to be adopted. Analgesic, or non steroidal anti anti-inflammatory drugs are advised by the orthopedic doctor. Surgical intervention is needed to align the bones back into normal positions. It is done with the help of pins and screws.
The joint is then immobilized by a thumb spica cast. Physiotherapeutic exercises are needed for improving the strength and mobility.
Other Modes of treatment:
Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the symptoms. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints. Certain yoga exercises can also be helpful in strengthening the muscles.
