Causes and risk factors
The normal hair cycle consist of anagen phase and telogen phase. In anagen phase, there occurs normal growth of hair while the telogen phase comprises of shedding of hair. The normal anagen phase is of 4-7 years. However, in short anagen syndrome this period is short of around 1-2 years. The exact cause behind this is not known; however, studies suggest that certain genetic factors are responsible for this condition.
Clinical presentation:
As the name suggests, the only characteristic feature of this syndrome is growth of short hair on the scalp. No other complaint is seen. The hair follicles are normal while the texture and fragility is also not affected.
Investigations:
Diagnosis is done on the basis of a clinical examination along with certain investigations. Hair pull test, dermoscopic examination of the scalp along with microscopic examination of the hair is done. In combination with all of the above, certain other conditions which can cause this are ruled out.
Treatment:
There is no effective treatment available for this condition. In most of the cases, the condition persists even during adulthood. Topical application of medications which will stimulate the hair follicles can be advised, however, their results are mixed.
Other Modes of treatment:
Certain other modes of treatment can also be helpful in coping up with the symptoms. Taking into consideration the symptoms in a holistic way, homoeopathy can offer a good aid for the relief of the symptoms. The Ayurvedic system of medicine which uses herbs and synthetic derivates can also be beneficial in combating the complaints.
