Causes and risk factors
The causes of snapping hip are divided into two categories – External and internal causes. Snapping hip can occur when the illiotibial band passes over the greater trochanter (external cause). Acetabular labral tear and intra-articular loose bodies can also cause snapping sound from the hip (internal cause) when the iliopsoas tendon passes over the pectineus tendon it can also lead to a snap or click sound from the hip. Movement of the long head of the biceps femoris over the ischial tuberosity can also cause a snapping hip sound. Activities which cause repeated bending of the hip is another common cause. Hence people involved in sports or dancers or athletes are more likely to suffer from this condition.
Clinical presentation:
The prominent feature of snapping hip is an audible snap or a click sound from the hip region. This can be painless or can be painful. Pain in the groin region is another complaint with which the patients can come up with. The pain is dull and aching in nature. It is aggravated by activity and is better by rest. On examination, tenderness in the hip and groin region is felt. Snapping of hip over time can lead to hip bursitis.
Investigations:
Clinical examination and the symptoms narrated are usually sufficient for confirming the diagnosis. X-ray is usually done to rule out fractures. MRI or CT scan is done for analyzing the damage to the tissues.
Treatment:
Rest and reducing stressful activities is the first step to be implemented. Analgesic or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are advised by the orthopedic doctor to allay the pain. Corticosteroid injection can be given. Crutches can be used for walking or the bear the weight until the complaints begin to resolve. Certain other modes of treatment like use of ultrasound, electrical stimulation can also be used. For improving the strength and activity of the muscles, exercises are advised. Surgical intervention can be done if this conservative method fails to be effective. However, surgical intervention is rarely needed in such a condition.
