Causes and risk factors
The main cause of the snapping sound is friction of the soft tissue over the bony prominence. Abnormal movement of the intra-articular structures seems to be responsible in this. Studies have shown that abnormalities in the meniscus of the semitendinosus and gracilis tendon or in the biceps femoris muscle have been associated with snapping knee syndrome. Activities which cause repeated bending of the knee is another common cause. Hence people involved in sports or dancers or athletes are more likely to suffer from this condition.
Clinical presentation:
The prominent feature of snapping knee is an audible snap or a click sound from the knee region. This can be painless or can be painful. Pain in the thigh region is another complaint with which the patients can come up with. The pain is dull and aching in nature. It is aggravated by activity and is better by rest. On examination, tenderness in and around the knee joint is felt.
Investigations:
Clinical examination and the symptoms narrated are usually sufficient for confirming the diagnosis. X-ray is usually done to rule out fractures. MRI or CT scan is done for analyzing the damage to the tissues.
Treatment:
Rest and reducing stressful activities is the first step to be implemented. Analgesic or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are advised by the orthopedic doctor to allay the pain. Corticosteroid injection can be given. Certain other modes of treatment like use of ultrasound, electric stimulation can also be used. For improving the strength and activity of the muscles, exercises are advised. Surgical intervention can be done if this conservative method fails to be effective. However, surgical intervention is rarely needed in such condition.
Other modes of treatment:
Certain yoga exercises or physical exercises under a trained physiotherapist will help to strengthen the muscles and ligaments and improve the flexibility.
Complications:
Snapping knee can eventually produce neurological complaints.
When to contact a doctor:
Contact an orthopedic doctor if one experiences any click or snapping sound in the knee region.
