Causes and risk factors
Several unhealthy practices such as reading from an improper distance, watching excessive television and lack of physical activity can trigger an accommodation spasm. Apart from these, improper nutrition, weak muscles and intake of certain medications also hamper the process of accommodation.
Clinical presentation
A person having spasm of accommodation experiences eye fatigue very easily when performing near work. The eyes become red and cause a burning sensation. Headaches, blurring of vision, and diplopia (double vision) are the other known symptoms.
Investigations
Spasm of accommodation can be diagnosed on the basis of the patient’s symptoms and a complete ophthalmic examination.
Treatment
All incorrect practices related to the patient’s eyesight must be corrected. Proper lighting, correct posture, good nutrition, and adequate physical activity is recommended.
Any underlying disorders leading to the spasm of accommodation must be corrected. Eye exercises are also recommended.
