Stretch marks

Stretch marks are defined as fine lines or streaks on the surface of skin appearing on account of rapid growth or stretching of the skin. It is seen more commonly in females as compared to males.

Causes and risk factors

Collagen is the protein in the skin which acts as scaffolding and provides a smooth and healthy skin. The skin is normally elastic. When the skin is overstretched the collagen is damaged leading to stretch marks. Some people have a familial tendency to gain stretch marks. Pregnancy is the most common condition in which stretch marks can be seen. Multiple pregnancies, twin babies, and excessive of amniotic fluid are certain conditions which increase the chances of developing stretch marks during pregnancy. Sudden growth during puberty, rapid weight gain and excess use of corticosteroids like creams and ointments or oral medications lead to stretch marks development. Stretch marks can also be caused due to some underlying diseases like thyroid diseases, Marfan syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome etc.

 

Clinical presentation

Stretch marks are more commonly seen on thigh, buttock, abdomen and breasts. Fine lines or streaks are seen. They are pink, dark red or dark brown color streaks. Over time these lines fade away but they do not disappear completely. In most of the women they can be a matter of worry from cosmetic point of view.

 

Diagnosis and Investigations

Usually in cases of stretch marks no investigation is required, diagnosis is confirmed on the basis of the symptoms narrated and the local examination carried out by the dermatologist. In certain other symptoms also persist, certain sets of investigations can be advised by the consultant.

 

Treatment

Overtime the stretch marks fades lighter and lighter and usually do not need any tertament.Variety of treatments are available for stretch marks but none have proven to be completely effective. Various creams, ointments and lotions are available. Over the counters the cosmetic camouflage are also readily available. The advanced techniques have made laser therapy treatments available which helps to make the stretch marks less visible. Although expensive cosmetic surgery is one of the treatment available.

 

Recent update:

As per an article at medindia studies have shown that there are various home remedies available for stretch marks, a few among them are application of aloe vera gel, almond oil, lemon juice, olive oil etc.
