Causes and risk factors
Yips is a type of focal dystonia causing involuntary contraction of muscle. It is caused due to overuse of muscle. Anxiety is additional contributing factor for development of yips. Risk factors for yips are players [golf, baseball, and cricket], old age, and lower handicap patient.
Clinical presentation
Yips presents as involuntary jerking of wrist muscles. There may be tremors, twitching of muscles, muscular spasms.
Investigation
Medical history by the patient and Clinical examination by the doctor helps in diagnosis. An x ray of wrist joint is recommended. Imaging studies such as CT scan may be useful for further evaluation. Nerve conduction study may be performed.
Treatment
As yips is caused due to overuse of specific muscles, a change in grip will be useful in the treatment of the condition. Physiotherapy will also help in managing yips. Medications such as anti anxiety drugs may be useful for yips with anxiety. Behavioural therapy, relaxation techniques, stress management techniques will contribute further to the treatment.
