Healthy tips to choose right drink

Sip your way to healthy drinks

  • Check sugar:

A sweetened soda has about 100-150 calories. Cutting back on just one can of a sugar-sweetened soft drink can cut back enormous amount of calories and help you lose up to 4 to 5 kilograms in a year. It will even lower the risk of diseases like diabetes.

  • Calorie-free isn’t healthy:

Drinks labeled as “Diet” drinks contain artificial sweeteners. These condition our taste buds to crave sweets later. Good old plain water is the best beverage. Add few drops of lemon juice or orange juice if you don’t like it plain.

  • Caffeinated drinks:

Coffee or tea is healthy only in moderation. Do not exceed the intake to more than 2-3 cups per day. Caffeine is often addictive. Do not add too much sugar.

  • Alcohol:

It is said that alcohol in moderation lowers the risk of heart disease. If you don’t drink, there is no need to start. Alcohol increases the risk of liver disease, obesity, and breast and colon cancer. It is a complete No-No for pregnant females. Alcohol interacts with medications. Risks are surely greater than benefits. Stay away!

  • Put away sports beverages for athletes:

Sports drinks are intended to provide carbs, electrolytes, and instant fluid for high-intensity workouts. They act as source of calories and nothing else for people with sedentary lifestyle. Keep them away unless you workout heavily.

  • Put those energy drinks on hold:

The overpriced energy drinks are loaded not only with sugar and calories but also with caffeine. They can raise your blood pressure and put you at risk of diabetes. Pull the plug on these drinks. No one needs them.
