ADDUCTOR HALLUCIS

Adductor hallucis is the muscle of foot located on the bottom of foot. It has 2 heads: oblique head and transverse head. Oblique head lies in the space under the first, second, third, and fourth toes and transverse head lies in the bottom of the foot below third, fourth, and fifth toes.

Origin

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsal bones.

Insertion

First phalanx of the great toe.

Blood supply

Lateral plantar artery.

Nerve supply

Lateral plantar nerve.

Action

It helps to bend (flex) the great toe and move the toe to the outer side (abduct).

Disease/Injury

Plantar fasciitis may occur due to overuse of muscle.

Muscle Exercise

Strengthen your toe muscles by sitting upright in a firm chair and place some marbles on the floor and lift the marbles with toe. Rotate ankle and move the ankle to the side. Then release the marble and lift four marbles likewise and then relax for some time and repeat the same.

Interesting facts

High heels, short shoes or walking, running on uneven ground can cause pain in this muscle.
