ARYEPIGLOTTICUS

Aryepiglotticus muscle is present bilaterally on each side of the larynx.

Origin

The aryepiglotticus originates from the arytenoid cartilage.

Insertion

It inserts into the epiglottis.

Blood supply

Laryngeal branch of the superior thyroid artery.

Nerve supply

Recurrent laryngeal branch arising from the vagus nerve.

Action

The muscle closes the larynx by the epiglottis in order to prevent swallowed food and drink from entering the trachea and larynx.

Disease/Injury

The muscle is affected in inflammation of the larynx or epiglottis.
