AURICULARIS

The auricularis consists of 3 different muscles: the auricularis anterior, inferior, and posterior. All these muscles are attached to the external ear.

Origin

Superior auricular muscle – galea aponeurotica.

Anterior auricular muscle – galea aponeurotica.

Posterior auricular muscle – temporal bone.

Insertion

Superior auricular muscle – cranial surface of the auricular.

Anterior auricular muscle – in front of the ear.

Posterior auricular muscle – into the cranial surface of the concha.

Blood supply

Superficial temporal artery, posterior auricular artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

All of these 3 muscles help to move the outer ear in various directions.

Interesting facts

These muscles can be used to consciously move the outer ears.
