BUCCINATOR

Buccinator is a cheek muscle which connects the mouth to the bones of the jaw and cheek. This muscle contains the salivary gland duct.

Origin

Maxilla and mandible.

Insertion

Modiolus at the angle of the mouth.

Blood supply

Facial artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

Helps in cheek movements like whistling, blowing, and smiling.

Disease/Injury

The buccinator muscle receives its nerve supply from facial nerve, which can be damaged in a condition known as Bell’s palsy.

Exercise

Puff out your cheeks by filling your mouth with water. Then spit out this water through a small hole between your lips.

Interesting facts

The buccinator is also called the ‘trumpet muscle.’
