Supraspinous ligament, ischial spine.
Insertion
Coccyx, sacrum.
Blood supply
Internal iliac artery.
Nerve supply
Sacral nerves.
Action
It helps to support the visceral organs in the pelvis. With the help of levator ani muscle, it pulls the organs forward to support the coccyx.
Disease/Injury
Not sitting in an upright position, continuous emotional stress, or direct injury in pelvic area can cause pain in this muscle. Women may have pain in the same muscle during the 9 months of pregnancy.
Muscle Exercise
You can practice the ‘bridge pose’ to strengthen this muscle. Whilst lying on your back, bend your knees and lift your hip upwards while your hands and feet remain flat on the floor. Hold and repeat.
