DORSAL INTEROSSEI OF FOOT

Dorsal interossei are foot muscles located adjacent to the bones of the four toes of the foot.

Origin

Metatarsal bones

Insertion

Proximal phalanges of 2nd, 3rd and 4th toes

Blood supply

Lateral tarsal arteries, medial tarsal arteries, plantar metacarpal arteries, dorsal metacarpal arteries, dorsal digital arteries.

Nerve supply

Lateral plantar nerve.

Action

It helps to move outward the 3rd and 4th toe of foot. It also helps to bend the foot and helps to control direction in violent activities.

Disease/Injury

There can be pain in muscles due to injury, fracture, or any other trauma.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen this muscle, you can practice bunion exercise. Put toe separator between the 2nd to 5th toes and then slowly move them upwards. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds and then relax it slowly. Repeat this 3 times a day.

Interesting facts

Do not wear tight shoes to prevent this muscle from getting injured.
