ERECTOR SPINAE

The erector spinae muscle is made up of 3 muscles: spinalis, longissimus and iliocostalis. These muscles are present on both the sides of the spine. All the 3 muscles are located in relation to the spine.

Origin

Thoracic vertebrae 9-12, iliac crest.

Insertion

Cervical and thoracic vertebrae.

Blood supply

Lateral sacral artery.

Nerve supply

Spinal nerve.

Action

It helps to keep the spine in proper position and thus helps to sit straight in the chair.

Disease/Injury

Weak erector spinae muscles can lead to back pain, poor posture, and injuries during sports.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen this muscle, you can practice crawls. Lie down on your stomach on the floor and bend your hands at elbows and place your palms in front of you. Then start moving your shoulders back by tightening your abdominal muscles and straighten your neck. Hold this position and then pull body forward with left arm while pushing it through right foot. Bend the right leg at knee on the ground, crawl on the ground about 30 feet and then repeat the same.

Interesting fact

While performing exercises to strengthen the abs, if you forget to exercise your back muscles it may result in back injury. So it is very necessary to strengthen back muscles too along with abs.
