Lateral epicondyle.
Insertion
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th phalanges.
Blood supply
Posterior interosseous artery.
Nerve supply
Posterior interosseous nerve.
Action
This muscle carries out extension of the fingers, wrist, and the elbow.
Disease/Injury
The extensor digitorum muscle is one of the affected muscles in the commonly occurring condition known as ‘tennis elbow.’
Muscle Exercise
Stretching the extensor digitorum makes the muscle strong. To perform this stretch, stand with the arm straight out in front of you and wrist relaxed. With the forearm facing towards the ceiling, the other hand should bend the wrist downwards until a stretch is felt. This position should be held for 30 seconds and repeated on both arms.
