FLEXOR DIGITORUM PROFUNDUS

The flexor digitorum profundus is a deep muscle of the forearm. It extends from the forearm right up to the fingertips.

Origin

Ulna

Insertion

Into the distal phalanges.

Blood supply

Anterior interosseous artery.

Nerve supply

Anterior interosseous nerve, ulnar nerve.

Action

It carries out flexion of the 4 fingers and the wrist.

Disease/Injury

Overuse of this muscle can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetitive stress on the tendons of this muscle as in flexing the wrist and fingers to type on a keyboard can cause swelling and pain at the wrist.

Muscle Exercise

Flexing the wrist joint with dumbbells helps to strengthen the flexor digitorum profundus.

You use this muscle while playing the musical instruments like guitar, piano, etc.
