GLUTEUS MINIMUS

Gluteus minimus muscle is one of the 3 gluteus muscles. It lies underneath the gluteus medius.

Origin

Ilium – gluteal surface.

Insertion

Femur – greater trochanter.

Blood supply

Superior gluteal artery.

Nerve supply

Superior gluteal nerve.

Action

It helps to take the thigh away from the midline, rotate the leg, and it also helps to support the body on one leg along with the gluteus medius.

Injury

It may get injured during sports or trauma from a fall. Also, prolonged sitting may cause pressure and atrophy of muscles.

Muscle exercise

Side-lying hip abduction helps to strengthen the gluteus minimus muscle. Lie on either side, head supported by hand, and raise the upper leg. Repeat 20 times. Do the same with the other leg.
