INFERIOR OBLIQUE

The obliquus oculi inferior is a thin eye muscle. It is located in the front margin of the floor of the orbit of the eye.

Origin

Maxillary floor of the orbit.

Insertion

Posterior sclera – inferolaterally.

Blood supply

Ophthalmic artery.

Nerve supply

Occulomotor nerve.

Action

It helps to rotate the eye externally away from the center of the body. It also moves the eye upwards and outwards.

Disease/Injury

Muscle can get injured during cataract surgery, from local anesthesia.

Muscle exercise

Figure eight exercise for strengthening eyes. Trace figure 8 on the floor about 10 feet away from you, without moving your head. Practice it 5 times a day.
