INFERIOR RECTUS

Inferior rectus is one of the six muscles of the eye. It is the muscle located in the orbit of eye.

Origin

Common tendinous ring.

Insertion

Anterior part of the sclera – inferior surface.

Blood Supply

Ophthalmic artery.

Nerve supply

Occulomotor nerve.

Action

It helps to move the eye in different directions like downward direction, externally, i.e., away from the center of the body and inwards, i.e., towards the nose.

Disease/Injury

Injury to the orbit of eye while playing sports can cause injury to inferior rectus muscle and lead to strabismus (squint).

Muscle exercise

Rotate your eyes in clockwise direction 3 to 5 times then rotate in opposite direction. Then close the eyes and rest for a few moments to prevent dizziness. You can practice it on a daily basis.

Interesting facts

Weak muscle can cause blurring of vision and tiredness of eyes.
