ISCHIOCAVERNOSUS

Ischiocavernosus muscle is present in both males and females and lies just below the perineum.

Origin

Tuberosity of the ischium.

Insertion

Crus penis.

Blood supply

Perineal artery.

Nerve supply

Pudendal nerve.

Action

It helps to bend the anus. In males, it helps to stabilize the erect penis, and in females, it creates tension in vagina during orgasm.

Disease/Injury

If this muscle gets injured, there will be no proper erection of penis.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen this muscle, you can perform Kegel’s exercise which comprises of contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles.

Interesting facts

Kegel’s exercise helps to bring back the normal tone and shape of vagina after child birth.
