LATERAL CRICOARYTENOID

Lateral cricoarytenoid is located in the larynx. It extends from the lateral cricoid cartilage to the arytenoid cartilage.

Origin

Cricoid cartilage.

Insertion

Arytenoid cartilage.

Blood supply

Superior and inferior laryngeal arteries.

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve.

Action

It closes the vocal cord and protects the airway.

Disease/Injury

During total or partial thyroid removal surgery, injury to laryngeal nerve affects the function of lateral cricoarytenoid muscle. This causes the voice to become poor or weak for several weeks before it regains normalcy.
