LATERAL RECTUS

Lateral rectus is one of the six muscles of eye. It is located in the orbit of eye on the outer side of eye.

Origin

Common tendinous ring.

Insertion

Anterior part of the sclera – lateral surface.

Blood supply

Ophthalmic artery.

Nerve supply

Abducens nerve.

Action

It helps to control the movement of eye. It is very strong and allows the eye to focus on target. It helps to move the eye away from the nose.

Disease/Injury

Lateral rectus muscle palsy in which the person may not be able to look sideways or away from the nose.

Muscle Exercise

NA

Interesting facts

If there is lateral rectus muscle palsy, exercise for eyes will not help much as there is problem in the nerve supplying the muscle.
