LONGUS COLLI

Longus colli is situated bilaterally on the anterior aspect of the spine.

Origin

C5-C7, T1-T3 vertebrae.

Insertion

Cervical vertebrae.

Blood supply

Ascending pharyngeal artery, vertebral artery.

Nerve supply

Cervical nerves.

Action

Useful in several head and neck movements such as head bending, head rotation, and side-to-side movements.

Disease/Injury

Overuse of this muscle can strain the upper portion of the spine.

Muscle Exercise

Practice head nods whilst lying on a flat surface without a pillow. Repeat 10 times a day.
