MEDIAL RECTUS

Medial rectus is one of the six muscles of eye. It is located in the orbit of eye.

Origin

Common tendinous ring.

Insertion

Anterior part of the sclera – medial surface.

Blood supply

Occulomotor nerve.

Nerve supply

Ophthalmic artery.

Action

It helps to control the movement of eye. It helps to move the eye towards the nose.

Disease/Injury

In medial rectus muscle palsy, the 3rd cranial nerve supplying this muscle gets affected. The eye movement becomes difficult, along with double vision.

Muscle Exercise

To improve the vision, hold the pencil or any object at a distance of one hand from you and try to concentrate on it.

Interesting fact

Due to injury, or sometimes by birth, the muscle is affected, which leads to movement of eye towards the nose, causing squint (esotropia).
