MIDDLE PHARYNGEAL CONSTRICTOR

The constrictor of the pharynx middle is a neck muscle. It is smaller than the constrictor of pharynx inferior. It is a fan-shaped muscle.

Origin

Hyoid bone.

Insertion

Pharyngeal raphe.

Blood supply

Ascending pharyngeal artery, lingual artery.

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve

Action

It constricts and helps to pass the bolus of food downwards in the food pipe.

Disease/Injury

Stress, strain, inflammation or dysfunction of the muscle can hamper the swallowing action of the pharynx.
