OBTURATOR INTERNUS

OBTURATOR INTERNUS

Obturator internus muscle is one of the lateral rotator group muscles of the hip.

Origin

Ischiopubic ramus, obturator membrane.

Insertion

Femur – greater trochanter.

Blood supply

Inferior gluteal artery.

Nerve supply

L5, S1, S2 nerves.

Action

It helps to rotate the hip joint internally and externally. It also helps to stabilize pelvis to prevent injury during movement.

Disease/Injury

Overstretching of the obturator internus muscle can injure it.

Muscle exercise

To strengthen this muscle, practice ‘wall internal and external hip rotation.’ Lie on the floor with your legs propped up against the wall, keeping a shoulder-width distance between them. The buttocks should be in contact with the wall. Now, rotate your feet away from each other without moving the pelvis. Hold for 3 seconds and then repeat. These are external rotations. For internal rotations, the feet should be rotated towards each other. Hold for 3 seconds and repeat 10 times.
