OPPONENS DIGITI MINIMI (HAND)

The opponens digiti minimi is a small muscle found at the outside edge of the bottom of the hand that controls the little finger.

Origin

Hamate bone, flexor retinaculum.

Insertion

5th metacarpal bone.

Blood supply

Ulnar artery.

Nerve supply

Ulnar nerve – deep branch.

Action

It is the muscle that curls the little finger and helps grasp objects.

Disease/Injury

Excessive typing work can strain the opponens digiti minimi, leading to pain in the hypothenar eminence.

Muscle Exercise

Hold a rolled-up towel between the thumb and the little finger. Squeeze the towel with these 2 fingers only and then release. Repeat.
