OPPONENS POLLICIS

The opponens pollicis is a thenar (thumb region) muscle. It is triangular in shape.

Origin

Trapezium, transverse carpal ligament.

Insertion

Into the metacarpal bone of the thumb.

Blood supply

Superficial palmar arch.

Nerve supply

Median nerve.

Action

The muscle allows the tip of the thumb to touch the tips of other fingers and as in grasping an object.

Disease/Injury

Holding an object like pen or a brush for a longer time leads to pain in thumb.

Muscle Exercise

Thumb opposition: Hold one of your hands in front of you. Touch your thumb to each of the fingers in order, squeezing each of them for a few seconds. Repeat with the other hand.

Interesting facts

The muscle forms the fleshy pad at the base of your thumb.
