ORBICULARIS OCULI

The orbicularis oculi muscle lies in the eyelid and around the eye. It is the only muscle capable of closing and blinking the eye.

Origin

The frontal, maxillary and lacrimal bones.

Insertion

The orbicularis oculi blend with the neighboring muscles and fibers around the orbit.

Blood supply

Ophthalmic artery, facial artery, superficial temporal artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

The muscle closes the eyelid. It compresses the tear gland and keeps the eye moist.

Disease/Injury

Blepharospasm is a condition in which the eyelids twitch or blink involuntarily. Bell’s palsy results in the inability to close the eye.

Interesting facts

The muscle helps you to wink and express concern. When you look towards bright sunlight, your orbicularis oculi closes the eye tightly.
