ORBICULARIS ORIS

The orbicularis oris muscle is located around the mouth.

Origin

It arises from the modiolus, the maxilla and the mandible.

Insertion

Mucus membrane of the lip margin.

Blood supply

Facial artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

The muscle is responsible for mouth movements like smiling, laughing, talking. It helps in puckering of lips. The muscle is used in playing brass instruments like trumpet and flute. This muscle also helps to close the mouth.

Disease/Injury

Satchmo’s syndrome – Rupture of orbicularis oris muscles in people who play the trumpet. The muscle can also get injured because of its overuse in playing brass instruments.
