PALATOPHARYNGEUS

Palatopharyngeus is a long, fleshy muscle located in the mouth. It extends downward on the sides and backward to the pharynx on the soft palate.

Origin

Palatine bone, palatine aponeurosis.

Insertion

Thyroid cartilage, pharyngeal walls, palatopharyngeal arch.

Blood supply

Ascending palatine artery, greater palatine artery.

Nerve supply

Vagus nerve.

Action

It moves to prevent the bolus of food from entering the nasopharynx.

Interesting facts

The movement of palatopharyngeus muscle sometimes leads to snoring in some people.
