PALMARIS BREVIS

Palmaris brevis is a small, thin muscle located in the palm. It is quadrilateral in shape.

Origin

It arises from the palmar aponeurosis and the flexor retinaculum.

Insertion

Palmaris brevis is inserted into the skin of the palm and sometimes into the pisiform bone.

Blood supply

Palmar metacarpal artery.

Nerve supply

Superficial branch of the ulnar nerve.

Action

This muscle helps in gripping objects. It is also responsible for formation of creases on the palm.

Disease/Injury

Palmaris brevis spasm syndrome is a relatively rare occurrence. The causes are nerve injury, post-surgical, spontaneous, or even familial.

Interesting facts

The palmaris brevis, amongst other muscles, helps to deepen the hollow of the palm.
