PALMARIS LONGUS

The palmaris longus is a wrist muscle. Its tendon is located between the flexor carpi ulnaris and the flexor carpi radialis.

Origin

Humerus – medial epicondyle.

Insertion

The tendon is inserted into the palmar aponeurosis.

Blood supply

Ulnar artery.

Nerve supply

Median nerve.

Action

This muscle is responsible for flexing the hand at the wrist joint. It helps in fist formation.

Disease/Injury

The palmaris longus can be used as a graft during surgery for wrist and hand injuries.

Muscle Exercise

Wrist flexion exercises with the help of dumbbells help to strengthen the palmaris longus tendon.

Interesting facts

The palmaris longus is absent in 14 out of every 100 humans.
