Plantar interossei of foot

Plantar interossei are 3 intrinsic muscles of the foot. These are located beneath the bones of the toes of foot.

Origin

3rd, 4th and 5th metatarsal bones.

Insertion

3rd, 4th and 5th proximal phalanges.

Blood supply

Plantar artery, dorsal metatarsal artery, plantar arch, dorsal arteries.

Nerve supply

Lateral plantar nerve.

Action

It helps to move the foot towards the body.

Disease/Injury

Plantar fasciitis may be the reason for pain in this muscle.

Muscle Exercise

Before getting out of bed, move your feet up and down while keeping the leg stable. Repeat this 10 times and then start walking. Doing this activity helps to relieve the pain of plantar fasciitis.
