PUBOCOCCYGEUS

Pubococcygeus is a hammock-shaped muscle found in the pelvis of both genders. It is part of the levator ani muscle.

Origin

Pubis, obturator fascia.

Insertion

Coccyx, sacrum.

Blood supply

Internal pudendal artery, internal iliac artery.

Nerve supply

Sacral nerves.

Action

It helps to control the flow of urine. It undergoes contraction during orgasm. It also helps during childbirth. It stabilizes all the pelvic organs.

Disease/Injury

Premature ejaculation of semen in men can occur if these muscles do not work properly. Also urinary incontinence, frequent urination, and fecal incontinence is observed in both males and females.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen the pubococcygeus muscle, you can practice controlled kegel exercise. Contract and release it as slowly as you can. Count slowly up to 5 and gradually change from a fully relaxed stage to fully contracted stage, then hold it for 2 seconds and go back to fully relaxed stage by counting 5 again. Repeat this 10 times.

Interesting facts

Before doing the exercise, it is necessary to identify the muscle. The easiest way is to stop the urination in middle of it and start again, do this several times until you feel the muscle.
