QUADRATUS PLANTAE

Quadratus plantae is located at the heel on the bottom of the foot.

Origin

Calcaneus, long plantar ligament.

Insertion

Into the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus.

Blood supply

Medial plantar artery, lateral plantar artery.

Nerve supply

Lateral plantar nerve.

Action

It helps to bend (flex) the 2nd and 5th toes.

Disease/Injury

Heel pain is most commonly associated with this muscle.

Muscle Exercise

Using foot roller or porcupine massage ball for exercise helps to relieve pain in this muscle.

Interesting facts

The muscle may get injured due to high heels, short shoes; wearing socks, stockings with tight bands, etc.
