RECTUS CAPITIS POSTERIOR MAJOR

Rectus capitis posterior major is located in the posterior aspect of the neck. It begins in the axis and moves upwards to meet the skull bone.

Origin

It arises from the 2nd cervical vertebra (axis).

Insertion

Inferior nuchal line.

Blood supply

Occipital artery.

Nerve supply

C1, suboccipital nerve.

Action

It helps to move the head backwards, sideways, and also to rotate the head.

Disease/Injury

Overuse and incorrect posture can cause pain and discomfort in head and neck region.

Muscle Exercise

Whilst sitting straight, bend your neck forward, hold for 5 seconds and repeat. Now do the same movement, but bending your neck backwards.
