RISORIUS

Risorius is a facial muscle that plays a role in facial expression. It is located on the cheeks.

Origin

From the zygomatic arch, platysma and the masseteric and parotid fascia.

Insertion

Into the modiolus at the angle of the mouth.

Blood supply

Facial artery, transverse facial artery.

Nerve supply

Facial nerve.

Action

This muscle helps in smiling. It also produces wrinkles at the outer corner of the eyes.

Disease/Injury

Bell’s palsy, i.e., facial nerve palsy, can affect the function of this muscle.

Muscle Exercise

Whistling, pronouncing vowels, chewing bubble gum, etc., help to strengthen this muscle.

Interesting facts

The expressions of smile and laughter are given with the help of the risorius muscle.
