Semimembranosus muscle is located in the posterior aspect of the thigh. It is one of the hamstring muscles.

Action

It helps to straighten the hip joint and bend the knee joint and helps to rotate the leg towards the body when the knee is bent.

Disease/Injury

Strain on the hamstring muscles may cause severe pain; it is mostly observed in athletes in sports like running and sprinting.

Muscle Exercise

Weight-bearing exercises are important to strengthen the hamstring muscle. Exercises like seated leg curl, dumbbell lunge, lying leg curl can be performed.

Proper warm-up before any sustained physical activity is necessary to prevent this muscle strain.
