SERRATUS ANTERIOR

The serratus anterior muscles are located on the rib cage.

Origin

1st to 9th ribs.

Insertion

Scapula

Blood supply

Thoracodorsal artery, lateral thoracic artery.

Nerve supply

Long thoracic nerve.

Action

The serratus anterior muscle is responsible for upward rotation of the scapula. It helps in the process of respiration.

Disease/Injury

Overuse of the serratus anterior muscle can injure it giving rise to severe pain, especially during respiration.

Muscle Exercise

The serratus anterior can be strengthened by boxing a punching bag.

Interesting facts

The serratus anterior is also known as ‘boxer’s muscle.’
