SPLENIUS CERVICIS

Splenius cervicis muscle is located on the back of the neck.

Origin

T3-T6 vertebrae.

Insertion

C1-C3 vertebrae.

Blood supply

Occipital artery, transverse cervical artery.

Nerve supply

Cervical spinal nerves.

Action

It helps to turn the head, straighten the head. and bend the head towards back.

Disease/Injury

If this muscle gets injured you may feel pain on the angle of head and neck in a band encircling the head at the eye level and behind the eyes. You may feel a sense of pressure in the eyes and blurring of vision.

Muscle Exercise

You can practice lying neck flexion and extension exercises to strengthen this muscle.
